Music at the Cuco

Glossary

The words of the La Mancha countryside we use to tell our heritage.

  1. Cuco

Dry-stone hut with a round or square plan and a corbelled dome, built in La Mancha as a shelter for shepherds and farmers.

  2. Esparto

Fibre from the Stipa tenacissima grass, worked for millennia into ropes, baskets, soles and plaits.

  3. Corbelled dome

Roof closed by stepping each course of stone slightly inward over the one below until they meet at the top.

  4. Pedanía

Village that depends administratively on a larger municipality. La Felipa is a pedanía of Chinchilla de Montearagón.

  5. Dry stone

Building technique that fits stones together without mortar, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

  6. Pleita

Braided strip of esparto used as the base for baskets, panniers and the traditional moulds of Manchego cheese.
